Seeds then Roots by Michelle Schwartz

Visual Art – Boulder

I\'m Michelle. I moved to Austin about a year about from Boulder, CO. I enjoyed the hiking in the mountains while I was there but I had to move somewhere and surround myself with more artist. HELLO AUSTIN. I\'ve recently quit my full-time job at Juiceland, which I loved. However, I am focusing all my time and energy on making art. This is a new beginning for me. THANK YOU for everyone in my life making this possible. My intentions for my paintings are to draw the viewer in through paint handling and placement of forms in space. I do this through the manipulation of color, the physicality of paint, and through the use of a wide variety of materials. Although the surface itself is flat, my aim is to create shifting transitions within each piece. My process models how the world itself switches, changes, and becomes. Birth, growth, decay, and change; these paintings mirror the same process. I want people to take a second look at how interesting and beautiful most ordinary things are. I begin to create, then everything else is a reaction to what has been done or undone. I paint on wood mostly because it allows me to take away just as much as the paint thats put down. Sanding and carving into the wood is another medium to my paintings. Like painting, it is occupying my time and the space that is changing. I am inspired by and reacting to every thing in front of me everyday.
