Beauty – Los Angeles

Jennifer Buchalla is a Los Angeles based Hairstylist and Makeup Artist. She has been in the industry for 14 years. From a young age, artistic talent came naturally to Jennifer. Anything hands on and using creativity always sparked her interests. “I always knew I could never have a profession that didn’t include using my imagination”, says Buchalla. “I was always attracted to the arts. Painting, photography, writing- I’ve always be attracted to creative outlets.” As a child, she took a liking into styling her dolls and Barbies. She always practiced different hairstyles on them and would draw on them with markers acting as makeup. It was obvious the profession she would choose. During her teenage years, she enjoyed getting her friends ready for dances and social occasions. “My friends would be lining up when it came to me helping style their hair or do their makeup for school dances. I loved it. I was happy to share my talents with them”, she says. She went on to graduate High School, attend Community College, but found her true place in Cosmetology school. After receiving her California state Cosmetology License, she went one to further her education through Vidal Sassoon Academy and MAC Cosmetics. “Education in your field is something I find extremely important. Never stop learning. It is so crucial to stay on top of it even if you think you know it all. Trends, techniques, and products are constantly changing. Its imperative that you have a wide and current knowledge of all of those to give your clients the best outcome”, says Buchalla. She decided not to departmentalize her talents and just choose to do hair or makeup, but both. “Being able to do both makeup AND hair gives me the ability to be constantly learning and changing up my daily routine. Redundancy, I believe, is a recipe for a creative block and burn out. This way I can keep my artistic spark alive and fulfill my clients wants and needs.” She started her career after her education by assisting in a salon. She then went on to become an independent stylist. About 2 years after that is when she found production work and immediately fell in love with it. Jennifer has worked in all aspects of the industry, including: Film and Television, Runway, Photoshoots, Red carpet, Special Effects, Theater, Weddings, private Celebrity clients, color and precision haircutting. She loves the ability to be able to dip her hands into all different types of scenarios. “It keeps me constantly learning and loving what I do, and keeps my imagination working. Also, my favorite part of my job is making people not only look good, but making them FEEL beautiful, confident , sexy, empowered. I do all of that by enhancing what they already have.”
