Performing Art – New York - NYC

Demetria “D’vass” Charles was born and raised in New York City. Growing up, she always had a strong and passionate love for dance. She started training at the age of 4 in Elmont, NY, at Perfection Dance Center, where she studied Graham, Dunham, tap, ballet and hip hop. She later attended Frank Sinatra High School of the Arts, where she trained in pointe, modern and ballet, and continued to study and perform with prestigious companies like Martha Graham Dance Company, Forces of Nature Dance Theatre Company in Harlem, and with Queenz Finest Hip Hop Dance Group (Queens). Demetria went on to obtain her BFA in dance from SUNY Purchase College, in 2014. During her college career, she performed works by choreographers such as Balanchine, Adam Barruch, and former Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet member Ebony Williams. Upon her graduation from SUNY Purchase, Ms. Charles went on to work with Dissonance Dance Theatre Ngoma for Dance, in Washington, DC, to embark on her professional career. Always looking for opportunities to refine her choreographic skills, she choreographs and performs, by request, at weddings, anniversaries, professional gatherings and charity events such as the Candice Sickle Cell Foundation. She has also choreographed and performed for independent projects, including Ruby Sampson’s Headwrap Tutorial. To further her creative growth, she collaborates with recording/directing artists, such as Kenneth Juian Callier as the dancing muse for his music videos, as well her own dance visual videos. From "Dancing For Us", "Figures (Jessie Reyez Dance Interpretation)", and "Sex&She; - Dance Interpretation", D'vass is ongoing to evolve her visual inspiration with dance. Demetria was a guest company member with iKADA Contemporary Dance for their winter 2016 season to later become one of the newest core dance members of Periapsis Music and Dance, where she continued to build connections whilst working with choreographers such as Janis Brenner, and Manuel Vignoulle for their re-worked duet "Twine". She performed this virtuoso duet with violist Celia Hatton for her début at Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in August 2017. She continues to connect to her audiences through her energy, passion and emotion. Ms.Charles is open to acting and modeling, whilst keeping dance as her forefront.
