Brittany Miller Art

Visual Art – Victoria

Born and raised in Ontario, I have always been drawn to the west coast. After graduating from the university of Guelph in 2011, I finally made the leap across the country to live in whistler and eventually migrated to Vancouver island. As a psychology major, I have always been drawn to the inner workings of the human mind, which I would say is the driving force behind the bulk of my work. In society, humans are plagued by inner demons that lie deep beneath the surface of their being, waging a war within their own mind. Whether these are manifested as physical, mental, emotional, personal or social issues, everyone has some sort of hidden struggle. My work aims to expose these inward battles that we face and the strength that can be built when they are overcome. Through my art I aim to convey a sort of raw emotion and this, in turn, also functions a means of self expression. As a fairly recent self taught artist with no formal training, my style and skills are still being honed while I experiment more within this vast creative paradise. I started off doing more abstract work, but am currently focusing more on realism and portrait style paintings, as I feel the that this can truly capture the raw beauty of who a person is. I work mainly with acrylic paints as my medium of choice, but tend to use bright abstract watercolour backgrounds to draw attention inward to the detailed subject of the paintings. I believe that art functions as a means of capturing our interconnectedness and expressing the complexities of human nature. It is this that will continue to inspire my work in the future.
