Fashion – Atlanta

Fashion has been a part of my story for as long as I can remember. I was born in Monrovia, Liberia, moved to Atlanta when I was five, and then back to Liberia at nine. When I was nine I would sketch outfits in English class and then beg my Mom to have a seamstress make them. My first sewn creation was a black and white polka dot shorts suit, no less. I took a sewing class in college, but chose to major in engineering since I loved math and chemistry and knew it would pay the bills. Even in nerdy engineering school, I earned a reputation for wearing high-heeled boots and well-curated, oddly-colored outfits around campus. When I got into my career, I felt like something was missing and headed back to school to get a bachelors in Fashion Design and Marketing at American Intercontinental University – Buckhead. Armed with knowledge of how to make patterns and develop a clothing line, I started suakoko betty in 2007. When I’m not designing or making clothes, I enjoying dancing, cooking \"pseudo-foodie\" meals and hanging out with my husband and my six-year-old daughter and three-year-old son. I am really proud to be West African and to play a role in interpreting modern African design and dispelling old myths about what Africa has to offer.
