Visual Art – New York - NYC

If a pack of Crayola markers and fashion had an explosion in a vans factory the human embodiment of that would be Shawnette. George. Shawnette is the owner and creative director of ShawnG Originals a business she started at the age of 20. Shawnette also works part-time mentoring and teaching art to junior high school students in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn, while attending Brooklyn College studying Art and African-American Studies with a concentration in Sociology. After being forced to take a semester off due to an inability to pay her tuition a friend suggested Shawnette use her artist talents to customize sneakers for extra cash. That was the epic moment ShawnG Originals was born. ShawnG Originals is more than just custom sneaker design, it is artistic production. The love child of sub-culture and art, ShawnG Originals has expanded into a collection of art and social expression put into everyday objects with the heart of the business still being artwork on a simple white pair of canvas Vans. To date Shawnette has done many custom design including pieces done for rapper Lupe Fiasco and Philly based rapper Dosage. Always reaching beyond the stars and straight for the moon Shawnette plans to earn a PhD in African-American Studies and open a gallery-store to exhibit and sell her designs and artwork. Shawnette also plans to open her own after school program based on Black History and the arts.
