Nicholas Emil Kos

Visual Art – Melbourne

Hello! My name is Nicholas Kos and I began painting in my garage on cold winter nights in Melbourne, Victoria. I was eighteen at the time and was painting for friends or for whoever would take a free canvass. Which lived in my room next the Nirvana CD’s. Every morning I would stare into the art books of painters dead or alive; mostly inspired and deeply affected by the insurmountable pieces of Van Gogh. His sense of urgency was contagious. I am as self-taught as they come. And here I am twenty years later, still painting, still self-taught. I use oils as my medium. My art is thick, it is personal and my easel is abused and transient. My colours are often dark and melancholy. Brush strokes are bold and the palette is thick and frequently straight from the tube. I paint without fear of the outcome - this is my remedy to life. I’ve been featured in Brisbane galleries. But a favourite past time is interpreting portraits and landscapes by commission for loved ones. My art in a family home is the ultimate honour. I cannot keep a pair of pants clean from paint stains. At thirty-nine years of age I do not own a T-shirt without the mark of a strange, misplaced colour. I studied Aerospace Engineering and worked for many years in this field, but my evenings were spent creating. I am the ultimate cliché of a man giving up his ‘conventional’ life in the pursuit of a truer path. Problem is – the road to packing it all in wasn’t pretty. It was messy, like a palette. I remember an Engineering Manager saying that “time waits for no man”. Right-o then. Deal done. And so began a series of crises and breakdowns (see – messy) but here I am today. I paint. It’s what I do. I’m also a Dad to three young kids who like spreading paint around too (but not in the best places…) Please drop me a visit: #nicholasemilkos [email protected]
