Visual Art – Boulder

My name is Heather Hunt, I\'m a Colorado native. From the time I was old enough to pick up a paint brush my mother was encouraging me to paint. Both my sister and I had been in art shows as children. But it wasn\'t until the Summer of 2012, that I became completely captivated by the Native American culture when on vacation in Santa Fe. Something about the Southwestern art, buildings and culture captured my attention and admiration. The very first gallery I walked into had a huge J.D. Challenger hanging on the wall, I was obsessed. Every gallery I went into, all I wanted to see was more and more of his paintings. From there my family and I went to Taos, NM to visit the Pueblos. I was astounded and horrified to see the conditions in which the Native American people were living in in the year 2014 in America! They live in their preserved ancestral adobe homes and seem to barely be making ends meet. My heart went out to them. After I returned home I browsed through old black and white photos of Native Americans online and fell in love. I knew I wanted to create artwork based on these images I had found to translate the captured spirit of the individual and their culture to share with others. Because of the financial need I saw while visiting The Pueblos, 10% of my proceeds goes to a charity supporting the preservation of their culture.
