Music – Chicago

Doc ILL is an integral part of the Chicago based beat scene, affiliated with the Push Collective of producers and one third of the beat outfit Down Giant. His beats offer a synthesis of dubstep and hip-hop, with a layer of glitch on top. Even though his language goes outside the regular hip-hop parameters, his shit keeps beat heads movin' at every venue he swings through. His drum lines bring the rugged hip-hop aesthetic to a different level-- his stuttering polyrhythms leave people wondering whether he is influenced more by Madlib, Venetian Snares or Autechre. He might lay a dubbed-out bass line, only to counter it with a twisted high synth that insists on leering into an atonal sound world. Despite all of Doc ILL's seemingly experimental ways, his music is always smooth and soulful. His ability to combine radical and accessible ideas results in something sick as hell-- his tracks are both reflective and gun to the head brutal. Thanks for listening
