Photography – San Diego

“I like photography because it is a reality medium, unlike drawing which is unreal. I like to mess with reality...to bend reality. Some of my works beg the question of is it real or not?” — Storm Thorgerson ----- I like to say that I create images as opposed to calling myself a photographer...the camera is only a means to an end. A striking image has always affected me on a base level. I'm equally as influenced by the paintings of John Singer Sargent, Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Salvidor Dali as I am by the record covers of Storm Thorgerson's Hipgnosis and Storm Studios. I love the documentary photo work of Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank just as much as I love the portrait work of Richard Avedon or Alfred Stieglitz. William Eggleston's use of color has influenced me just as much as Sally Mann's surreal glass plate images from her large format camera. Even the way Sofia Coppola sets up her scenes in her films have impacted me dramatically. So why am I telling you all of this? To bring us back around to my first comment of course! My goal is to create images with emotional impact regardless of my subject. Being a musician I think of my photos as songs and hope the feeling conveyed stirs similar emotions as a great song. It is my hope that you will see the various threads of everything I love scattered through my photos all the while pushing toward something new and unique...isn't that always the goal? My name is David Abbott Palatsi and I live in San Diego, CA with my wife Autumn and our dog Luna. I play music, collect comic books, love Formula 1 racing, romanticize food and cooking, was an astronaut in another life and just keep getting tattoos.
