Visual Art – Sydney

Catherine Lee is an emerging artist specialising in abstract and figurative painting and drawing. Catherine’s practice explores the relationship between colour, movement and abstraction through expressive mark making and raw brushwork. She incorporates multiple mediums ranging from oil on canvas, acrylic and spray paint to create a fluid movement and intense impressions. Her work highlights the emotions associated with passion and romance using free flowing paint contrasted with harsh disruptions. Throughout her more figurative work, Catherine illustrates the connection between the viewer and the artwork, pushing an extreme of the male gaze, the female form and associated desensitisation created in modern culture. The female figures are eroticised and sensually exaggerated to express the over sexualisation of women in the media, photography and film, contrasting with notions of vulnerability and desire.
