With 2018 at a close, we wanted to share a couple of our favorite highlights from our Industry Exchange discussions with all the best advice from Ashley Petrie, Jamie Haynes, Natalia Aranovich, Gerry Maravilla and more.

We hope these tips and tricks will bring you valuable knowledge and assist in helping your art or your business soar in 2019!

1. Knock on Doors

You may not like this point because it requires extra effort, thick skin and tenacity. In any industry, who you know is a valuable piece of the puzzle which can help take you to the next level. Meaning? Go out there and network, network, network!

But first make sure you are 100% confident that your art is at its peak. Packaging and branding yourself creatively comes next, and finally your social media presence is the cherry on top! Once you have aligned all of these elements, you can then bang on all of the doors because someone out there is going to believe in you enough to want to help you.

2. Look Book

Think of this as a brochure to a company or a menu at a restaurant. It’s the one tool which might make or break whether or not people decide to follow, book or work with you.

Creating a lookbook / press kit / media kit is an easy way to grab people’s attention and offer a ton of beautiful information. The look book could also be a link to your website or even your instagram feed. Professional visuals are extremely important to show off your personality and unique work.

3. Know Your Audience

This point kept popping up amongst our industry professionals so we reckon it’s pretty important. Especially when it comes to sales and promotion. If you don’t know who you’re selling to or if you’re pushing your work or products to the wrong people, all that will be achieved is time and effort lost. You’re not going to grow or sell anything to be blatantly honest. There are tons of people searching for work like yours, so why not seek them out and eliminate the frustration from both sides!

4. Keep Your Rights

Never sign away your rights. This is quite possibly the most important point! Do not sign away the rights to your work in any way. You could allow someone to license your content for a set amount of time but avoid signing anything unless you have had a professional lawyer look through the contract.

Make it your priority in 2019 to copyright and trademark your names, ideas and logos.

You can use: USPTO.gov

Take control and protect your work! Or someone else will.

5. Use Your Resources and Networks

Ashely Petrie said “Google is your best friend” and she is so right! There is nothing you can’t find out or don’t have access to anymore. Make use of the internet.

Talk to people and put yourself out there. If you don’t, who will? Create, brand and market yourself and remember to have fun and enjoy the process, otherwise you won’t want to get out of bed in the morning. Positive thinking and a passionate work ethic is the fastest fuel to get you anywhere and everywhere.

To sum up, don’t be afraid to put yourself out there or to fail because failing only exists for those who don’t try.
